Understanding the Classics: Where to Start?
Why Read the Classics?
Classic books are considered "classic" for a reason. They have withstood the test of time because they tap into universal human truths that are just as relevant today as they were centuries ago.
Start with Accessible Authors
Don't jump straight into James Joyce or Leo Tolstoy if you aren't used to older prose. Start with highly accessible, plot-driven classics. The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas or Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen are excellent entry points.
Read with Context
Before starting a classic, read a brief summary of the historical context in which it was written. Understanding the societal norms of the time will make the characters' decisions and the author's themes much clearer.
Join a Book Club
Classics are meant to be discussed. Joining a classic literature book club—either locally or online—can provide motivation and help you uncover layers of the text you might have missed on your own.
