The Philosophy of Slow Reading
The Cult of Speed
We are constantly bombarded with tips on how to read 100 books a year or how to speed-read a novel in two hours. But literature, especially great literature, wasn't written to be consumed like fast food. It was written to be savored.
What is Slow Reading?
Slow reading is the intentional reduction of reading speed to increase comprehension, pleasure, and emotional connection. It involves pausing to appreciate a beautifully constructed sentence, re-reading a complex paragraph, and taking time to let the author's ideas marinate in your mind.
The Benefits
When you read slowly, you engage in active dialogue with the text. You notice nuances, foreshadowing, and character development that speed-readers completely miss. It also serves as a powerful form of mindfulness, reducing stress and improving focus.
